Before I spout any negatives about this disc, I just want to say Tenacious D is THE greatest Rock band in the world! However, this is not the greatest review ever written about the D, this is just a tribute to it.
All jokes aside, The Pick of Destiny is the new Tenacious D movie out in theaters this Thanksgiving holiday and this disc is the soundtrack to the movie featuring 15 all new Tenacious D songs! At least that's what the misleading sticker on the front packaging would have you believe. In all actuality, there's a few new songs and for the most part, a bunch of skits/spoken word bits from the movie put directly onto this album. Don't get me wrong, some of the bits are funny, but they certainly translate better on film.
Listening to some of these parts is just pointless without the accompanying visuals. To be honest, the highlights on this record are few and far between, but the song "Kickapoo" is an absolute riot. With Meat Loaf guesting as Jack Black's disapproving father and Dio spouting Rock-God advice to J.B, the laughs keep coming for four straight minutes. The classical pickings of "Classico" are a pure joy as well (who am I kidding, it's the obscenity laced lyrics featured therein that are the key. I never said I was above low-brow humor). The bottom line, however, is this - are just a couple of solid tunes worth the full-price that CD's go for these days? No, not really. If the studio had been smart, they would have just included this soundtrack with the DVD (when it eventually comes out) as a bonus disc to entice buyers a little more. What am I saying? They probably will and then all the suckers (like me) who shelled out the bucks for this somewhat funny, but not necessarily essential entry into the Tenacious D catalog will realize they've gotten the shaft. C'est la D!
