I was looking forward to this one. These young Liverpudlian lads have three great songs in rotation on my favorite satellite station and when it was released I pounced on it like a fiend. I ll admit that the rest of the album is not what I expected, but I'm warming up to it. Equal parts Echo and the Bunnymen, The Kingston Trio and The Doors--the album is a swirling carnival affair that works more often than not. Borrowing the vocal harmonies of the great folk acts of the late fifties--and mixing it with a big reverby guitar sound akin to Coldplay, they create a singular style that succeeds if you're not looking for a profound lyrical message. Though their reach sometimes exceeds their grasp--you have to admire their bravado. Frontman James Skelly possesses such a huge talent that there's no question that these guys will one day be a household name. In fact my favorite Coral song isn't even on the disc--recorded more recently it points toward amazing things to come.
