This year has seen it's fair share of brilliant albums from overseas. There have been incredible releases from Travis, Richard Ashcroft, Supergrass, and Oasis just to name a few. Enter the latest release from the wonderfully trippy Dandy Warhols. The catch, of course, is they're actually from the good old U.S.A., but you'd never guess it when listening to their stuff.
Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia isn't quite on par with The Dandy's last record Come Down, but it comes awfully close. It's also completely apparent that vocalist-guitarist Courtney Taylor-Taylor, guitarist Pete Holmstrom, sexy keyboard-bassist Zia McCabe, and drummer-back-up vocalist Brent DeBoer aren't out to make any political or profound statements. They just want to rock and have a good time, and with this latest effort, they succeed with such winners as the melodic opening number "Godless," and "Country Leaver," a zany country flavored tune that seems to be inspired by the crazy antics of alt rocker Beck. Other highlights include "Horse Pills" and "Get Off."
The album was produced by Courtney Taylor-Taylor and Gregg Williams, and although it does tend to be a bit repetitious, it offers some terrific psychedelic guitar work along with a heavy dose of heavenly electronica. It also benefits from offering up a lot of very catchy tunes. Besides, you can't dislike an album with a song that serves up the lyric; "she wore an itzy bitzy, teeny weenie, riding-up-your-butt bikini."
On a special side note the first pressing of this album contains a bonus disc with a collection of live songs featuring the classic not if you were the last junkie on earth
