Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger, the brother/sister duo that brought you the love it or hate it rock epic Blueberry Boat last year, have seen fit to grace fans with a an EP; an odd title for a collection of B sides and unreleased tracks, to be sure, when you consider it clocks in at 10 songs and 41 minutes long. But hey, what do you expect from a band that released a sophomore album at nearly 80 minutes in length?
EP pretty much gathers up all the odds and sods from The Fiery Furnaces previous two LP's. And just like the Friedberger's past albums, EP has some really great tunes, and a few that can only make you scratch your head and wonder how great this band could actually be if they hired a producer to pull back the reins once in a while. That, or maybe someone to shove Ritalin down their throats once in a while, or smack them with a tack hammer on occasion when they get out of control.
Gold stars have to be awarded to the likes of the opener "Single Again" (which was actually a stand alone single for Blueberry Boat) and the excellent B sides to "Single Again" "Evergreen" and quite possibly the best song The Fiery Furnaces have ever done, "Sing For Me." The previously unreleased anywhere "Here Comes The Summer" is also something that's worth showering the praise.
Oddly enough, it's the B sides to "Crystal Clear" off of The Fiery Furnaces debut Galowsbird Bark that don't necessarily find a way to gel, here. "Duffer St. George" "Smelling Cigarettes" and "Cousin Chris" are all way too uneven to thoroughly enjoy, and feel like rough demos or possibly blueprints to what would lead to the creation of Blueberry Boat. The previously unreleased closer "Sullivan's Social Club" is a throwaway track to be sure, and leaves somewhat of an unresolved feel to EP when all is said and done. But just like their previous two albums, EP has just enough to recommend if you're looking for a good album, even if it's not necessarily an essential one.
