The Fire Theft's debut album isn't just any run of the mill debut, it's actually all the original members from Sunny Day Real Estate; a highly underrated and under-appreciated band fronted by one of the greatest original voices of all time Jeremy Enigk. You heard right, all original members includes fantastic drummer William Goldsmith, and current Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel, going back to his first job while the Foo is on break. I can't emphasize enough that Sunny Day's album Diary probably sparked others such as Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional to do what they do, and their last album Rising Tide was so phenomenal that I was shocked to find that afterward Sunny Day broke up for good. Fire Theft essentially picks right up where Rising Tide left off, Enigk's soaring vocals, over Goldsmith's rhythmic drumming. Mendel's stellar bass is a welcome back indeed, and now there are full string arrangements added as well as three great instrumental tracks of just music. Enigk's lyrics are becoming stronger than ever as well, with most of the album being about the tribulations of realizing you're grown up now, and needing to be a responsible adult. Songs such as "Carry You" and "Sinatra" encapsulate those emotions entirely. What a welcome and fantastic return of a band once thought to be dead. Long live Sunny Day!
