Judging by the cover of the CD and the fact that these guys are on Victory Records, one might assume that they're a straight-up hard-core band. The Hurt Process, like so many other bands these days, combine the hard-core with a more melodic sound which features more singing and less screaming. In fact this UK-based six-piece, comes complete with two vocalists (one who sings and one who screams) giving them an emo sound that smacks of Thursday. They successfully fuse a hard-core edge with the more mellow tones of emo. The first track "This Piece" sounds like your typical new-style emo song that could easily get radio airplay. Songs like "Tuesday" and "Last Goodbye" showcase their ability to generate that singing/screamo sound with good song structure and a natural ease. They're also able to create great slower songs like the emotional "White Butterflies" and the calm and peaceful "Clarity."

Even so the first half of the album really didn't offer any stand-out tracks, and it wasn't until the song "Ornament," that I felt like these guys were capable of doing something that would distinguish themselves from the hundreds of bands that populate this "flavor-of-the-month genre. "Come Home" packs a good pure-metal edge--particularly during the verses. After the last track "Show Me Your Cards" (which shows off some nifty guitar arpeggios), I had to admit that The Hurt Process is a pretty decent band who, with the right break, might end up gaining a following of fans of both harder emo (Thrice, Lostprophets) and/or fans of poppier emo (Yellowcard, Taking Back Sunday).
