Man, these guys are unbelievable! My band, Raining Jade, had the privilege of playing on the same bill with these guys a few months back and they just blew me away and got me addicted. When I saw them play again with the band Momma, it made me want to be a part of that same energetic power that they harness and ride all over the stage. After listening to What Are You Listening To? I realized that the Kinison was one of the main bands that I could totally relate to both lyrically and musically. The CD's first song, "Farm and the Girls" hits the ground gunning, demonstrating their awesome style with the song's fiery drumming and vocals complete with screams that are reminiscent of Cedric Bixler of At the Drive-In and Mars Volta. The next, "Oh Boy that Girl Can Move" reminded me of Hot Hot Heat with occasional screaming shrieks. The CD kicked into fast-paced overdrive with "American Collectibles" which is a song that would get anyone psyched with its "Gotta Get Get AWAY!!!!!" screaming chant. "Every Genius Has Their Hangups" was another revved-up number with its "Don't Stop Won't Stop the Rhythm Goin'!" chant that made me want to get out and mosh like a barking mad 16 year-old punk. The song that I found the most affecting was "You Kissed Lilly" which I'm assuming is about an easy girl or a cheated-on situation. When the freak-out screaming (and what almost sounded like crying) started near the end, I thought about how many times an ex-girlfriend made me feel just like that. Other highlights include the synthesizer-laced "Wild and Crazy Kids" and the heavily-screamed "XOXOXO". The CD closed with the more poppy tambourine-heavy "No Talk." which brings the CD full circle. This is one of the best Cds of the year and I highly recommended it for anyone who could use a harmless way to release their pent-up aggression but make no mistake this is a well-rounded piece of work that's diversity will impress on any number of levels.
