A Senile Animal marks the umpteenth album in The Melvins prolific 20 year career. Make no mistake however, regardless how "long in the tooth" the guys are becoming, their music can still chew the listeners eardrums into pulverized flesh – same as it ever was. The last few years have seen King Buzzo and Dale Crover making quite the resurgence, teaming up with the likes of Lustmord and former Dead Kennedys' lead singer Jello Biafra on their last three studio LP's. A Senile Animal is also a tag-team affair with Buzzo and Crover teaming up with Punk-Metal duo Big Business. What has materialized is a record that's filled to the brim with a dual drumming assault (the first of its kind on any Melvins release) and King Buzzo letting loose with some of his fiercest Metal riffs in years. Animal runs the gamut of being The Melvins' most Prog-Rock leaning, King Crimson-esque record ever concocted, but a Crimson sound that's been put through a Motorhead meets The Obsessed type ringer. In fact it's my considered opinion that Senile Animal probably the most accessible Melvins disc in recent memory and one of the finer Metal records of 2006. I'd even go as far as saying that this may just be the best Melvins release since their early 90's one two punch of Houdini and Stoner Witch, which is saying a lot, considering the plethora of fine material The Melvins have released in the interim. If you consider yourself a Metal fan but have shrunk from the intimidating task of tackling The Melvins extensive catalog, A Senile Animal is certainly as good a place as any to take the plunge.
