Imagine my surprise when I came to find out that The Minus 5 would be releasing their second album of 2003. For those unfamiliar with this great band, it consists of lead singer Scott McCaughey, formerly of the Young Fresh Fellows, and current session guitarist for R.E.M, and Peter Buck, lead guitarist of R.E.M. Those of you who didn't hear their fantastic release earlier this year Down With Wilco, where Wilco themselves were actually the session band for the entire album, you missed out on one of the better albums of the year. I Don't Know Who I Am unfortunately is not one of the better albums of this year. In fact, I came to find out while reading the liner notes that this album is actually an outtakes compilation to their 2001 album Let the War Against Music Begin. And shockingly enough, this album feels just like outtakes! The album isn't horrible by any means, it's just terribly disjointed. Fans of only Down With Wilco will find this album completely boring, whereas if you're a fan of Minus 5, it's interesting to hear all of the songs that ended up not making the final cut to Let The War Against Music Begin. With only 2000 copies of this album being pressed for the public, I Don't Know Who I Am seems strictly aimed at just the die hard fans of this exceptional band.
