Watch out! Here comes the hype machine! ding ding! The Rapture, the new dance punk darlings have been peddled by countless indie big-wigs as the next big thing, and as I listen to peoples' opinions about them , I can't help but say what friggin" hypocrites they are. There are so many "hip" kids out there that bash the Strokes for ripping off the Velvet Underground, but proclaim that The Rapture are true originals. And to that I say pooh on you hipsters! Hello! Anybody out there ever heard of Robert Smith from the Cure? Well Luke Jenner of The Rapture sounds exactly like him. And C'mon! Could Jenner's guitar playing smack of Andy Gill of Gang of Four anymore than it already does? Just because all their great albums are out of print (Entertainment! especially) doesn't mean that they should be forgotten, obviously Jenner hasn't forgotten them. I'm not saying that The Rapture suck, I'm just saying that they get too much hype for not much substance. They lack lyrical greatness of someone like Radio 4, and they also lack the out-and-out fun that bands like!!! and Out Hud bring to the dance punk genre table. The Rapture are a good band, and Echoes is a good album, but neither are great, so don't believe the hype!
