Speaking of bands going for broke, The Raveonettes did exactly that with their third album Pretty in Black back in 2005. The Danish duo of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo turned their band into a four piece, employed mega-producer Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, The Go-Go's) and commissioned legends like Martin Rev of Suicide Moe Tucker of The Velvet Underground and Ronnie Spector of The Ronnettes for guest spots. All of this ended up going for naught as Pretty in Black fell completely on deaf ears, even to their biggest fans and supporters. For all their troubles, The Raveonettes were dropped from their major-label deal with Columbia and their future was at the very most optimistic, in doubt.

Three years later Wagner and Foo have returned from the drawing board a little older and wiser securing a deal with respected Indie label Vice and reverted back to the duo format that made them a buzzed about band earlier this decade. Lust Lust Lust is also a return to their earlier Drone-Rock sound influenced by the likes of My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus & Mary Chain and while it is a pretty good album, nothing much here stands out over their early work save for some neater guitar work at times by Wagner that seems to be influenced by Robert Smith of The Cure. Those Cure inspired tracks like "Hallucinations" (Disintegration-era Cure) and "Lust" (Faith-era Cure) are the best of the bunch. The rest of Lust Lust Lust is as stated a pleasant return to form but just falls short of those greater early albums Whip it On and Chain Gang of Love. The biggest plus of all Lust Lust Lust has going for it? It makes it easier to forget about Pretty in Black.
