For those of us who are familiar with Toby Keith, his music and his attention grabbing antics, you have to wonder what he could do that would still shock us. From his 60 Minutes interview with Dan Rather or his feud with Dixie Chicks front woman Natalie Maines (which I was think was more like a pro wrestling sideshow) there isn't much he hasn't done. By the title of this new release it set your imagination racing as to what sort of shock and awe we're in store for this time.

The first single an ode to bar drinking called "I Love This Bar" is a song every Bar dweller can relate to. The Bar he describes is populated by a vast array of different kinds of people co-existing having fun - kind of like Cheers where everybody knows your name. "Whiskey Girl" is a catchy tune about a woman who is rough around the edges and whiskey is her poison of choice. Most any one who's partaken of Whiskey will tell you it mostly a man's drink of choice, not befitting a lady. Alas Toby's gal is all about the JD.

Toby Keith, as you know, has made a name for himself with his patriotic pro-war anthems, so I figured he might do a few of those types of songs on the new album I was right. In the song "American Soldier" Keith sings of the hardships of America's fighting men and women. Keith has explained he is not a hateful warmonger and I believe this song shows a bit softer side to the Country tough guy. As I mentioned before I was waiting to see if there was anything on the album that might offend anyone, Well there are a few songs that have that potential. The song "If I Were Jesus" gives a look at what Keith himself thinks it would be like to be Jesus. Toby's take on Jesus is that he was still a regular guy with a sense of humor and let people be who they wanted to be, instead of being a judgmental hard-liner. I myself didn't find the song offensive but some people could.

The songs I think have the most potential to offend are "I'll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again," and the "Taliban Song" (which is obviously a response to Steve Earl's "John Walker's Blues") while both are relatively humorous, I don't know if parents would want their children listening to a tune about toking a blunt with the Old hippie Country star. As for the "Taliban Song" it gives a very derogatory look at people from the Middle East. This is Toby's most controversial song since "Angry American" and with lines like "We'll put a boot in your Ass it's the American way" and "I bid fair adieu and flip a couple fingers to the Taliban/I bid fair adieu and give a big boner to the Taliban." While some would find this hilarious others might find it to be sophomoric toilet humor. If that kind of thing offends you I'd advise you to steer clear of Shockin' Y'all. While I don't find the album all that offensive, I also don't find it to be all that great. Keith is a talented song writer and performer but this album seemed rush to press to cash in on his sudden superstardom. My recommendation would be to get his previous releases, and it you like those, I'd still borrow this one from a friend before you lay down you're hard earned American dollars
