"Meet Virginia" the first single from the debut album by San Francisco's Train is a perfect example of both what's good and not-so-good about this record. The lyrics are clever, it starts off strong with a couple of quirky-pop verses, but when it hits the chorus it runs off the rails and winds up sounding like an out-take from a Live album. (Live, the band).

Although the album is consistently good, nothing really stands out enough to thrust it beyond the sounds-like-every-other-band quagmire. In general it sounds like John Mellencamp and in particular Live. Which isn't so bad if you like Live, but sometimes the Train tracks run a little too close to Hootieville. Toward the end it starts chugging along a little better with some raunchy blues rocking that bring the Black Crowes to mind. If this sounds like your cup of tea, pick it up, but chances are you already own it.
