Verbena could be classified now as another one of those bands joining the ranks of The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Vines and The Hives in bringing the garage-style rock sound to the mainstream, even though they've been around since the mid-90's. The only difference with Verbena is that they also lean toward Seattle-underground grunge influences, which makes for a sludgier sound akin to pre-Nevermind Nirvana or Mudhoney, or even the Stones (young now instead of then). In fact, the first track, "Way out West," sounds like modern day Rolling Stones song with Cobain-like vocals, and "Killing Floor (Get Down on it)" is a swaggering pop-rock song with its "hoo-hoo-hoos." Out of their most old-style rockin' songs, "White Grrls," has a killer fuzz-guitar intro, and "It's Alright, It's Okay (Jesus Told Me So)," has an intro and chorus that sounds straight from Velvet Revolver. They also show off their funkier side on "I, Pistol," with its funky guitar lick and tambourine, but "All the Saints" and "Camellia" show they don't really have the knack for writing good slower songs. However, you can't blame them for trying. Toward the end, the album winds down with more of the same good-old, swaggering rock n' roll with the exception of the more metal-influenced, "Devil in Miss Jones." However, the last song, "Dirty Goodbyes," is actually a pretty good lounge ballad with a memorable piano arrangement. Even though their sound isn't that original or particularly catchy, Verbena proves that sometimes dirty, old-fashioned style rock n' roll can still sound good - y'know I like it - yes I do.
