When some folks think of the Warped Tour compilations, the image that may come to mind is a double-disc set full of happy pop-punk and radio-friendly "emo" bands. However, now that times have changed and the musical tastes mentioned are now more well-suited for MTV and those NOW pop music compilations, Warped Tour has started to showcase more of the underground bands that you won't hear on the radio or MTV.
Of course, the good-old punk rock is still there as well. The first disc starts off with songs like Dropkick Murphy's swingin' "Sunshine Highway" and Hot Water Music's catchy-chorused "Poison." Nural's alterna-based "Tension" and Big D and The Kids Table's ska-crazy "You Lost, You're Crazy" are great additions as well. The heavier side of Warped Tour is shown with Atreyu's screaming-and-singing "Bleeding Mascara," Underminded's hard-hitting "It's Kinda Like a Bodybag" and Zao's blistering "The Rising End." The standout tracks on disc 1 are Gogol Bordello's rock-and-vaudeville-mixed "Start Wearing Purple" and the Offspring's old classic "Beheaded" (from long before anyone knew who they were), which is a surprising treat that reminds us how good they were before their hits made it to pop-radio.
On the second disc, Flogging Molly contributes the live version of "Selfish Man Live in L.A." and Bedouin Soundclash gives off a reggae-like vibe with "Gyasi Went Home." Warped Tour's soft side is shown with Armor For Sleep's emotional "Car Underwater" and Youth Group's dreamy-pop "Skeleton Jar." Hawthorne Heights also give out their catchy "Ohio is for Lovers" and punk veterans Pennywise (who usually play at every warped tour) also contribute with "Yell Out." However, the highlight of the second disc is Gym Class Heroes' original mellow rap-groove, "Taxi Driver." Pretty much all the contributed songs from these relatively unknown bands show that the Warped Tour lineup is changing, growing and straying further away from the Good Charlotte and Simple Plan clones and more toward the more talented bands that you won't find on MTV's Total Request Live.
