When I first heard that Jonah Matranga from the highly-underrated band Far (who was in my opinion one of the most original-sounding alternative bands of the late 90's) cut a solo acoustic album, I knew it wouldn't be your average singer/songwriter sound-alike record. In fact, instead of coming off like another Dashboard rip-off, One Line Drawing sounded more along the lines of Elliott Smith or Kings of Convenience. Once I heard the first track, the somber yet beautiful, "UmÂ…" I knew I'd find this whole album to be likably unique. "Bitte Ein Kuss" is a Postal Service-style mix of acoustic guitar and electro beats with witty lyrics about "In the bed disco," and "Smile," is another acoustic electro jam much like something from Jimmy Eat World or Get Up Kids. "Perfect Pair" is like a Springsteen song with its shuffling drums in the background, and "Yr Letter" is the perfect example of what would sound like an unplugged Far song with all the rage and energy you'd expect. I could really relate to this song, especially the ending. "Why Are We Fighting?" is another great tune with hints of electric piano, but "Softbelly" was the song that made me think, "Why isn't this song on the radio?" It had the perfect arrangement of piano, electronic drums, guitar, and a singalong chorus. The last song, "Sixes" was seriously one of the saddest and loneliest-sounding songs I'd ever heard, but that's what made it great. From its fake rain intro, to its ending with crashing drums and crying out vocals, it became my new song to listen to after a breakup. This song alone will make you wonder why Jonah's One Line Drawing hasn't become the new Dashboard Confessional, and why this album isn't as recognized as it should be. Really, it's that good.
