For those of you not familiar with this powerhouse jangle pop group, the New
Pornographers are a Canadian supergroup of sorts consisting of Carl Newman of Zumpano on most of the vocals throughout with indie rock goddess Neko Case chiming in on occasion with her Kirsty MacColl influenced vocals. Dan
Bejar of Destroyer also contributes to vocals and songwriting on occasion.
For those of you who are familiar with this amazing band, you know that the
New Pornographers are best known for their formula of ass shaking rock that
is impossible not to dance to, or at least tap your feet. If mellow
introverted introspection folk tunes are your speed then stay the hell away
from this band.
Even though some these artists are known for their folksier side, Porno is
their chance to bask in the glow of their upbeat side. Their first album
Mass Romantic showed this, and Electric Version is no different. By far the
best tunes are when Newman and Case exchange vocals between each other, such as "The Laws Have Changed," "Miss Teen Wordpower," and the self-titled
track. Tunes like "From Blown Speakers" and "The End of Medicine" are
recommended for those who get their jones from band like The Posies and The
Shins. If a kick in the ass is what the doctor recommends to you, may I
suggest listening to this album first thing every morning, because the New
Pornographers are best kind of over the counter happy pill there is.
