This one is definitely the surprise find of the month and will, no doubt, be prominent on everyone's best-of lists come the end of the year.

Come Away With Me is aptly titled because it simply transports the listener to another place and time. A soothing and comfortable place which brings to mind the jazz-tinged soulful ballads of Billy Holiday or Sarah Vaughn, and more recently the "gentle on my mind" tuneful musings of Shelby Lynne. A stylish and impeccably rendered collection of tunes that bring to mind the country / soul /jazz flavor of Ray Charles "Georgia." You could argue that this album borrows pretty liberally from I Am Shelby Lynne, but then again, that was my favorite album last year - so I don't blame her.

I guess the most fascinating thing about Norah is that she is the daughter of George Harrison's sitar mentor Ravi Shankar, and her easy way with the piano and intimate "pillow-talk" vocals are as charming as anything I've heard for some time. The arrangements are spare, yet warm and ultimately tuneful, offering hungry jazz-ballad fans "manna from heaven" in a way that smacks of Diana Krall. Her interpretations of beloved standards (including Hank Williams and Ray Charles) as well as her own material are a revelation. Put this one on when you're ready to cuddle with your baby, and see if it doesn't inspire grand things.
