There may be more than a little bit of irony to the title of this one. To some extent this album smacks of Record Company forced-grooming. Y'know - cash in on the Emo cow while she's still leaking at the utters. They certainly have popped-up their sound a bit from their former Ska-Core aesthetic but in my opinion this is to the good. The Resignation is a great record that I think remains true enough to their past while opening themselves up to a potentially larger audience. With a band this tight and talented, there's nothing wrong with cashing in.
Matthew Embree has the perfect voice to front this kind of band big and throaty, not the least bit fey like a few new found front-men I might mention. The Resignation comes at you with a variety of musical approaches, from good old-fashioned punk rock, to reggae, ska, with just a dash of Emo for the suits. Think Reel Big Rancid Fish, arrested by the Midtown, Police just in time to Save Ferris. Nicely arranged, well thought-out use of the horn section - lyrics not too pretentious I'm in. Great Record. Young fans of this album, would be well advised to go check out their parents old Oingo Boingo or Police records. Same concept, new generation.
