The Former frontman of Pavement is back with his sophomore solo effort, and it reeks of triumphant progressive elements intertwined with jam-rock, jazz, and Jethro Tull-esque folk. Blessed with a beautiful mind indeed, Malkmus--joined by the Jicks--weaves overly smart and quirky lyrics with unique and fresh-sounding music--often reminiscent of the prog-rockers of the mid-seventies. The album exceeds expectations from his debut, and rightfully restores him to his "king of the fringe" throne. There are nothing but highlights on this record, however the upbeat "Vanessa from Queens," the new-wave feel of "Dark Wave," and the Hendrix-inspired "Witch Mountain Bridge" are definite favorites. Still, Pig Lib revolves around "1% of One," a nine minute jam session that is as much a folksy revival of Pavement as it is a new beginning for Malkmus. Pig Lib gives longtime Pavement fans something to satisfy their addiction, while salivating "indie/emo" kids are given a new indie-god to show off to all their friends. Pig Lib will finish as one of the finest records released this year.

If only your comments had come true. Pig Lib is unabashed genius, and critics will regret not looking upon this album with more praise. It's sad when only Rob Sheffield has the plums to rank this among the years best. I forget where it finished on Pazz & Jop, but it wasn't high enough for me.

Ditto to all sentiments here regarding "Pib Lib," one of Malkmus' finest moments, and one of his most criminally neglected. I thought this album resoundingly improved on his debut, and provided a template that I hope he follows down the line. The prog epics here go a long way towards validating the genre for the post-punk set - no small feat.
